How a Pressure Switch Works

This part plays a critical role as your furnace prepares to work in your home.

Here’s what goes on after your thermostat’s call for heat:

  • Your furnace’s control board begins running the draft inducer blower motor. This pushes out combustion gases from the heat exchanger and pulls in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
  • When the pressure switch senses that plenty of air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and commands the control board to ignite the furnace.
  • Your furnace ignites and creates heat.

What Happens When a Pressure Switch Fails

When your pressure switch isn’t working the way it should, you’ll likely hear the fan going and the switch clicking a few times before the furnace turns off completely. When a part isn’t functioning right, your furnace will turn off to protect you.

Your furnace will let you know something is wrong with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to exhibit error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.

You may note short flashes or an alternating slow flash as it transmits a fault code.
