What NATE Certification is and Why it Matters

November 08, 2016

Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning in Ravenna always writes about how our service techs are NATE-certified, and while it sounds encouraging, what does it actually mean?

NATE is an abbreviation for North American Technician Excellence and, according to their website, is the nation’s largest certification organization for HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) and refrigeration technicians. The organization is owned, operated, developed, and supported by the entire HVAC and refrigeration industry but not all people in the industry are required to be certified through NATE. The certification is optional and technicians can work in the heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration industry without being NATE-certified.

It’s important to Service Experts that our experts are NATE-certified to make sure we are sending the most qualified and skilled technicians into your home. To make sure experts meet these standards, the NATE-certification assessments validate real-world working knowledge of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems for technicians. The exams are knowledge-based exams that assess the technician’s knowledge of these standards.

Since Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning focuses on the HVAC side of NATE-certification and not refrigeration, there are only particular areas relevant to our technicians. NATE exam candidates may earn installation and/or service certification in one or more of the skill areas listed below:

  • Air Conditioning
  • Air Distribution
  • Gas Heating
  • Oil Heating
  • Heat Pumps
  • Hydronics Gas (service only)
  • Hydronics Oil (service only)
  • Light Commercial Refrigeration (service only)
  • Commercial Refrigeration (service only)
  • Ground Source Heat Pump Loop Installer
  • Senior HVAC Efficiency Analyst
